Premier Li Keqiang and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh discussed bilateral ties during their meeting in New Delhi on Sunday. The two leaders stressed that China and India will develop new engines for world economic growth.

A new diplomatic beginning to shore up economic ties.

During the meeting with Singh, Li said China and India will work together to foster new areas in cooperation among Asian countries, and create new engines for the growth of the world economy.

China and India will also join hands to tap their market demands for Asia and other parts of the world, and forge ahead their strategic cooperative partnership.

Premier Li also said the aim of his visit is to showcase the increasing political mutual trust between China and India.

He added that common interests between the two countries are larger than the differences, and the two sides are expanding their pragmatic cooperation.

For his part, Singh said India is very glad that Premier Li picks India as the first stop of his maiden trip abroad.

China and India are cooperative partners rather than competitors.

Singh said India will cooperate with China to expand their economic cooperation, and to manage and control border disputes.

Premier Li Keqiang arrived in New Delhi Sunday afternoon.

The three-day visit will see Li and Singh witness the signing of several agreements between the two sides.

A joint statement will be issued that will chart the course for China-India relations in the coming years.

Premier Li took a business delegation with him, comprised of executives from the banking sector, power generation equipment makers and telecom companies looking to strike deals during the visit.

With economic cooperation key to each other’s well-being and the world’s economy, the two biggest emerging economies will make concerted efforts to address challenges in restructuring the global financial order.

HUNDREDS of people packed into Oldham Civic Centre to hear words of wisdom from Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus.

Professor Yunus, known as the world’s “banker to the poor”, accepted a last-minute invitation to visit Oldham during a trip to Greater Manchester. The Nobel laureate and social activist spoke to councillors and guests in the council chamber yesterday.

In 2006 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize — an honour he shares with Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Aung San Suu Kyi. He also holds the US President’s Gold Medal.

He launched the Grameen Bank in the late 1970s to offer microcredit — providing small loans to poor Bangladeshi villagers to help them buy livestock or fund an enterprise to lift themselves out of poverty. The model has since been copied in developing countries worldwide.

Councillor Abdul Jabbar, Cabinet member for finance, said: “We are delighted that Professor Yunus agreed to come to Oldham. There were around 300 people from all over the North-West; he got three standing ovations because his words were so inspirational.

“He is one of only seven people in history to have received both a Nobel Prize and the US President’s Gold Medal, that is some achievement, so to have him in Oldham is a massive honour.”

MPs to debate gay marriage plans

THE coalition’s controversial gay marriage legislation returns to the Commons today with Tory MPs and activists deeply split over the issue.

The move has been championed by David Cameron but he has faced Conservative opposition at all levels from the grassroots to the Cabinet.

A group of more than 30 current and former local party chairmen warned that the plans would drive Tory voters to the UK Independence Party and make a Conservative election victory in 2015 impossible.

Tory leaders rally around Feldman

CONSERVATIVE co-chairman Lord Feldman will face questions about allegations he described grassroots activists as “swivel-eyed loons”, at a meeting of the party’s board.

The peer, a close friend of David Cameron, has strongly denied making the reported comments about local Conservative associations.

The row over the disputed remarks came as the Tory high command faced attacks from within the party over the Government’s plans to legalise gay marriages.

Man dies in gas explosion

A MAN has died and another person is still missing after a gas explosion which destroyed a terraced house, police said.

Neighbours spoke of their shock at the severity of the explosion in Newark, Nottinghamshire, which reduced the property to rubble and prompted police to warn local people to remain indoors.

Fire crews found the man’s body this morning during a search of the rubble after the house collapsed.

Cameron calls for tax transparency

DAVID Cameron has written to the leaders of Britain’s offshore tax havens stressing the need to “get our own houses in order” as he pushes for international action to tackle avoidance schemes.

In a message to 10 crown dependencies and British overseas territories Mr Cameron said he backed their right to be low tax jurisdictions but insisted that rules needed to be set and enforced fairly.

The move comes ahead of next month’s G8 summit in Northern Ireland, where Mr Cameron will push for an agreement aimed at clamping down on tax evasion and avoidance.

Abu Qatada makes SIAC freedom bid

RADICAL cleric Abu Qatada will launch a fresh bid for freedom today as he seeks to be released from prison at an immigration tribunal.

The terror suspect, who recently pledged to voluntarily leave Britain after years of fighting deportation, was jailed in Belmarsh prison in March when his bail was revoked.

Qatada will request bail at a Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac) hearing in London this morning but faces a challenge from the Government to keep him locked up.

Porn warnings for primary pupils

MANY parents believe schools should teach children about the dangers of pornography as soon as they are old enough to use the internet, a survey suggests.

It reveals that the majority of parents do not want it to be left to them alone to educate their youngsters about the controversial issue, and a large proportion think that pupils as young as five or six should be given lessons on the subject.

Russell Hobby, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), which conducted the poll, said that many young people are exposed to explicit materials online and on mobile phones, and need to know how to cope with this.

Man in court after two children die

A BRITISH father is due to appear in court in France today, where he is expected to be formally charged with slitting the throats of his two young children.

Julian Stevenson, 47, is alleged to have killed his daughter, five, and son, 10, after he was entrusted with them for the first time since separating from his French wife.

It is thought she discovered the bloody scene when she arrived at his flat on Saturday afternoon and found her former husband standing on the stairway in blood-stained clothes.

Yahoo close to buying Tumblr

YAHOO is on the verge of buying online content-sharing site Tumblr in a 1.1 billion dollar (£725,115,300) deal.

The acquisition could be announced later today, and would be the biggest of the 10-month reign of chief executive Marissa Mayer as she tries to attract more traffic and advertisers to the Internet company’s website and mobile applications.

The Sunnyvale, California, company’s board of directors were meeting last night to consider approving the deal, and Yahoo has promised to unveil “something special” this evening in New York.

One dead, two hurt in plane crash

A MAN has died while a boy and another man are fighting for their lives after a light aircraft crashed on the approach to an airport runway.

The victim, who was a passenger in the plane, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at Caernarfon Airport in North Wales.

A second man, aged in his 60s, suffered “serious multiple lower limb injuries” and a boy received head and abdomen injuries, according to the Welsh Ambulance Service.

Army launches new recruitment drive

THE Army has launched a recruitment drive to help find 10,000 personnel just weeks before thousands are due to be laid off.

It is hoping to draw new staff with a television campaign as part of an overhaul of the recruitment process which will see positions advertised in job centres.

The move comes ahead of the single biggest round of armed forces job losses under the coalition which could see in the region of 5,300 redundancies on June 18.

New laws ‘open to abuse of power’

PROPOSED anti-social behaviour laws are open to abuse of power and could be used by councils to create new crimes ranging from spitting to homelessness, a think-tank has warned.

The Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing bill, which featured in the Queen’s Speech earlier this month, includes powers to ban certain activities from designated areas.

The Manifesto Club claims these Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) are more wide-ranging than the powers they will replace while including fewer checks on their use leaving them open to exploitation.

Manufacturers seek out other options to keep profit margins

Dell Inc, the world’s third-largest personal computer manufacturer and one of the most time-honored players in the hardware-making industry, is betting on a 1-year-old software unit to redefine its brand after the global PC market started to suffer from declining sales and the company announced it was going private.

Company executives said developing Dell’s software and corporate technology service arms is a critical step for the company’s transition in the post-PC era.

Dell’s software group is projected to bring the company $2 billion to $3 billion in revenue over the following three years with 60 percent of the current revenue generated out of the United States, said John Swainson, president of the unit.

Software group

The IBM Corp veteran and former chief executive officer of software company CA Technologies Inc was recruited by Michael Dell, founder and CEO of the Texan company, only last year to build a software group from scratch.

“The biggest accomplishment is in one year we successfully created the software group and made a number of acquisitions to give us what I would call critical math around the business,” said Swainson.

Dell started to push the growth of its software group through mergers and acquisitions well before the establishment of its own unit.

In August 2010, Dell launched a high-profile bidding war for storage company 3Par against the world’s largest PC maker Hewlett-Packard Co. Although HP won the bid eventually, spending $2 billion, it marked the start of Dell setting off on its acquisition spree to build competitiveness in its corporate software sector.

Dell’s previous purchases include software developer Quest Software, security appliance developer SonicWall Inc and disaster recovery specialist AppAssure.

On May 6, Dell announced it was acquiring Enstratius Inc, a provider of cloud management software. The acquisition represents Swainson’s latest effort to add muscle to the software unit.

As of today, the group’s software group has more than 1,600 engineers and 2,500 sales personnel.

By Derek Bonnett: How much punishment is too much? Like so many other aspects of the sport of boxing, there is no accurate way to truly answer this question because, in this regard, factors like genetics, durability, and recuperative powers just can’t be measured. Some fighters we like to give the benefit of the doubt because they have proven their durability while others get pulled by their corners willingly or against their wills. Sometimes we complain about an abrupt intervention and sometimes we recognize that retiring a fighter in his corner or throwing in the towel mid-round was the smart choice. This weekend we witnessed two very different bouts between Guillermo Jones and Denis Lebedev and Devon Alexander and Lee Purdy. The first, a Fight of the Year frontrunner, saw torrid back and forth action between Jones and Lebedev. Throughout the contest Lebedev’s right eye began to swell into a horrific mass reminiscent of Hasim Rahman’s forehead injury against Evander Holyfield many years ago. However, Lebedev’s corner showed little interest in keeping their fighter on his stool as he continued to fight well enough to be leading on the scorecards at the time he was eventually stopped. Throughout the entire fight, the ringside physician was only asked to take a close examination once. Surprisingly, he had no qualm with allowing Lebedev to continue even though there appeared to be some serious orbital damage. Jones had to end matters on his own in this one as the referee, doctor, and corner seemed to believe Lebedev was fit enough to continue. On the flip side, Lee Purdy’s corner waved off his challenge of Alexander after seven rounds of relatively spirited action. Alexander was in control, but he had never hurt Purdy or had him close to the canvas. Purdy was bleeding from the nose, but it was hardly a matter in need of dire attention. Mostly importantly, Purdy wanted to continue and even compromised asking for just one more round.

Had I been an authority in either contest, I would have stopped Lebedev from further damage in either the ninth or tenth round. Additionally, I would have allowed Purdy to fight on for one more round to prove himself at the very least. He seemed poised to last the distance even if it were only to lose lopsidedly on the cards. Yet, I respect a corner’s decision to act as they see fit. After all, it is they who should truly know their fighter and read certain signs outsiders miss. My only hope is that they truly know their fighters as well as they think they do. I rarely choose to argue with cautious decisions, but find it harder to comprehend less careful choices when a fighter’s health is on the line.

On Friday, May 17, at Crocus City Hall, Moscow, Russia, Denis Lebedev was stopped by Guillermo Jones in eleven rounds of a WBA cruiserweight title bout. Lebedev hit the canvas in the eleventh in a grueling fight was called to a stop at the 1:54 mark. Lebedev suffered severe swelling around the right eye. Jones ended a lengthy layoff yet again to score a big victory in a strong candidate for Fight of the Year. The champion in recess moved his record to 39-3-2 (31) in making his third title defense. Lebedev dipped to 25-2 (19).

Jones, previously removed for inactivity, claimed the SecondsOut number three position at cruiserweight. Lebedev, who was leading on all three scorecards, fell from third to fourth.

Also on the card, Alexander Povetkin defeated Andrzej Wawrzyk by third round TKO in a WBA heavyweight title bout. The stoppage came at the 2:23 mark. Povetkin defended his title for the fourth time and raised his dossier to 26-0 (18). Wawrzyk fell to 27-1 (13).

Povetkin remained SecondsOut’s third best heavyweight and looks to be headed for a bout with Wladimir Klitschko for the third time in his career. Hopefully this one comes to fruition.

On Saturday, May 18, at Grand Oasis Resort, Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Sergio Thompson stopped late substitute Gustavo Sandoval in four rounds of a super featherweight bout. The end came at the 1:47 mark after Sandoval went down from a barrage of punches. Thompson enhanced his ledger to 27-2 (25). Sandoval fell to 13-5-1 (11).

Thompson fought for the second time in 2013 and remained SecondsOut’s number four super featherweight.

At Plaza del Toros Eloy Cavazos, Zitacuaro, Michoacán de Ocampo, Mexico, Edgar Sosa won a unanimous decision over Giovanni Segura in a twelve round flyweight bout. Sosa prevailed by scores of 116-112, 115-112, and 114-113. Segura was penalized for a low blow in round nine. Sosa raised his record to 49-7 (29). Segura dropped to 29-3-1 (25).

Sosa climbed from sixth to fourth among SecondsOut’s top flyweight contenders. Segura dropped from ninth to tenth. Milan Melindo was pushed from fourth to fifth. Hernandez Marquez fell from fifth to sixth. Toshiyuki Igarashi was bumped from tenth to ninth.

At Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, Devon Alexander stopped Lee Purdy in seven rounds of a IBF welterweight title bout. Purdy’s corner surrendered following a sustained beating in what was truthfully a spirited contest. Alexander fought with an injured left hand and defended his title for the first time. He raised his numbers to 25-1 (14). Purdy fell to 20-4-1 (13).

Alexander continued his string of impressive performances and jumped from sixth to fifth among SecondsOut’s top welterweights. Robert Guerrero fell from fifth to sixth.

“The two countries have the will, wisdom and capability to jointly nurture new bright spots in cooperation among Asian countries, create new engine of the world economy, provide huge growth potential and market demand for Asia and the world, and push forward China-India strategic cooperative partnership for peace and prosperity,” Li said at a smaller meeting with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.

The Chinese premier arrived in New Delhi earlier in the day for an official visit to India, the first leg of his maiden foreign tour after he took office in March.

“I want this visit to show the whole world that the mutual political trust between China and India is rising, practical cooperation is expanding and there are more common interests than differences,” said Li.

He hailed the progress made in the bilateral relations in recent years, adding that the leaders of both countries have agreed to raise the ties to a new high.

“China and India are important neighbors and two most populous emerging economies. Our relations are of strategic significance,” said Li.

Strengthening practical cooperation between the two countries and realizing their common development will benefit the two peoples and contribute to regional and world peace, stability and prosperity, he said.

A new super food group which is very healthy and readily available is being pushed by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization- insects.

They are also eyeing the insects as a solution to the current global starvation and food shortage. In fact, it is quite normal on some regions across the globe to have insects on their meals. Humans have over 1,400 edible insects to choose from such as beetles, grasshoppers, ants and crickets.

FAO has partnered with Chiang Mai University of Thailand- the country which has the highest number of identified edible insects- to study the profitable and dietary potentials of insects as well as growing them in some countries in Asia and the Pacific.

A number of insects were found to be more nutritious than meat and fish in terms of protein when dried, based on FAO’s initial study. Even the eggs and larva are also high in fat, vitamins and minerals.

Patrick Durst, FAO forestry officer, was assigned to administer the study since there isn’t much documentation on the life cycles of several insects, the population, and other potentials of the insects.

“Among forest managers, there is very little knowledge or appreciation of the potential for managing and harvesting insects sustainably,” he said. “On the other hand, traditional forest dwellers and forest-dependent people often possess remarkable knowledge of the insects and their management.”

FAO is also looking at the possibility of improving the lives of people as well to combat poverty since it can produce jobs in certain areas. People will be paid to catch, nurture, handle, ship and sell the insects. “Opportunities also exist for improved packaging and marketing to make edible insects more enticing to traditional buyers and to expand the market to new consumers, especially in urban areas,” said Mr. Durst.

The South Korean Defense Ministry announced Saturday that North Korea has launched three short-range guided missiles into the ocean.

According to the New York Times, Pyongyang set off two missiles in the morning, then another in the late afternoon.

These missile tests are relatively routine. One such test was reported in March.

North Korea also launched a three-stage rocket in December, along with its third nuclear test in February. This led the United Nations Security Council decided to make sanctions against Pyongyang more stringent.

Ministry spokesperson Kim Min-seok said that South Korea would “remain vigilant,” in the face of potential civil war.

“We remain vigilant and prepared in case the launching of these missiles might be followed by a military provocation by the North,” he said.

Such military provocation is not out of the question, as officials from North Korea have been threatening their neighbors in the south with hostile rhetoric for months, warning them of potential civil war, advising the international community to keep out of it.

Officials on the Korean Peninsula have been keeping their eyes peeled for North Korean missile tests since April, when South Korea reported that mobile launch vehicles had taken up positions on the North’s east coast.

The vehicles transported intermediate-range missiles named Musudan. Musudan missiles have never received testing. Pyongyang has threatened to attack American bases in Guam-these arms are thought to be the missiles North Korea could use against the Pacific island.

The missiles set off on Saturday, however, were not Musudans.

Earlier in May, American governmental officials claimed that North Korea wanted to ease tensions with the South Koreans, as Pyongyang had reelend in their Musudan mobile launch vehicles.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula seem to have lessened in the past few weeks in general, after the U.S. and South Korea finished their yearly military drills.

MUMBAI:
Badminton World Federation (BWF) and IMG Media have agreed
to a four-year contract for the centralised media rights of
the BWF Major Events, the BWF World Superseries and BWF Grand
Prix Gold.

The
deal, which comes into effect with the start of the 2014 Superseries
cycle next year, will see BWF’s media-rights earnings jump
four-fold as badminton’s world-governing body capitalises
on the sport’s increasing global popularity and profile.

The
BWF events are currently televised in more than 160 countries,
with more than 5,000 hours of coverage yearly. Additionally,
after just 18 months, BWF’s online channel boasts 22 million
views with fans already watching 70 million minutes of badminton.
The new agreement will look to improve on these solid figures.

BWF
president Dr. Kang Young Joong said, “I have said before
that my goal has been to strengthen BWF’s financial position
and this agreement with IMG further ensures that. BWF is
guaranteed higher revenues from this deal than ever before
for media rights.”

“This
exciting partnership with IMG will allow BWF to explore
interesting, new opportunities regarding how we can improve
and expand the BWF brand and visibility through various
media streams and products,” he added.

“Of
course, BWF is keen to extend its live and delayed coverage
of tournaments into new markets. Additionally, we will be
considering how we can continue to exploit broadband technologies
and use data to interact with and engage fans more. We are
also looking at an enhanced magazine show, profiling badminton
stars and events more prominently. There are many options
for utilising media platforms and BWF will be seeking to
maximise these,” he further stated.

The
consolidation of BWF’s media rights means IMG Media – a
division of IMG Worldwide, the global sports, fashion and
media company – will have exclusive rights to showcase all
of the best badminton action worldwide, having secured the
rights for the BWF Major Events (World Championships, Thomas
and Uber Cups and the Sudirman Cup), the 12-stop BWF World
Superseries tour which culminates in the year-end. Superseries
Finals and the Grand Prix Gold tour which for the first
time sees its media rights centralised by the BWF. This
is also the very first time the BWF is working exclusively
with one global partner across all of its media rights.

IMG
Media president Michel Masquelier said, “Badminton
is growing as a commercial commodity and is among Asia’s
leading and most popular spectator sports. IMG is pleased
to partner with the BWF to further raise badminton’s profile,
not only in the Asian marketplace – which is a booming sports
hub – but also into other markets where fans are turning
on to the fastest racquet sport.”

“This
is an exciting time for badminton and IMG looks forward
to this collaboration with BWF and badminton which has proven
a best-practices model for sport business in Asia while
continuing its global expansion,” he added.

It was a record breaking Silver Jubilee celebration to mark a major milestone for the ‘Queen of Cheese.’

Bosses at Cryer and Stott Cheesemongers wanted to stage a memorable event to mark employee Debbie Grindrod’s 25 years service with the company.

So they came up with a plan to create a brand new Guinness World Record for the highest cheese stack.

Debbie, 51, of Thornes, Wakefield, agreed to churn her hand to Caerphilly stacking cheese at Cryer and Stott’s Samuel Valentine Urban Food Hall at Allerton Bywater, Castleford, yesterday.

She used 25 different cheeses ranging from small 200 gramme chunks to weighty 26 kilo blocks.

The cheese tower included dairy products worth a whopping total of £2,500.

And she managed to create a 1.3m high cheese tower, which could be set to earn a place in the record books.

Grandmother-of-two Debbie started working part time at the Cryer and Stott stall in wakefield market 25 years ago.

She is now part of the management team and has helped develop a selection of local and artisan cheeses including Ruby Gold, which is made from ewes’ milk and Wakefield’s forced rhubarb.

Last year Debbie was busy supplying 12 tonnes of cheese fine foods for athletes at ther London 2012 Olympics.

Debbie said: “The cheese stack looks amazing and we have decorated it with flowers. It’s a great way to remember my 25th anniversary of working at the company.”

She added: “I’m passionate about cheese. I want to try all the new different cheeses that come out.

“I will never retire from cheese. They will be carrying me out of here in a cheesebox.”

Jemma Flowers, Cryer and Stott’s business development manager, said: “Debbie is very much regarded as ‘The Queen Of Cheese’ – building cheese wedding cakes that are like a work of art for loving brides or advising award winning chefs on their cheese selections.”

She added: “Debbie started her Cryer Stott career working part time at Wakefield Market with Alan Stott, son of the founder of the business. Debbie really developed in her skills knowledge 15 years ago when now owners of Cryer Stott Richard Clare took over.

“She evolved grew in her career as Cryer Stott subsequently bought a further two shops.”
